In January 2018, Cologne was hit with its heaviest snowfall in 30 years when as much as nine inches fell on some parts of the city. What does this have to do with freezing temperatures? Cologne is a city in Germany. It is often referred to as “Köln” by locals, and it has been known for its cold winters. The question of whether or not Cologne will freeze in the car came up recently because someone was looking for an answer on how long it would take to get from Köln to Munich.
Cologne does not freeze at 32 degrees Fahrenheit, which is the normal freezing point (0 degrees Celsius, 273 degrees Kelvin). The majority of colognes have an alcohol concentration of at least 80%. Fragrances do not freeze at these temperatures due to their high ethanol concentration.
The lower the freezing point of scent is, the greater the alcohol concentration. Pure alcohol only freezes at -173 degrees Fahrenheit (-114 Celsius). Most fragrances, of course, are produced with a lot of alcohol and essential oils. As a result, freezing colognes are unusual.
Most colognes are estimated to have a freezing temperature of -60 degrees Celsius (-76 degrees Fahrenheit). The freezing process would reach a temperature of -173 degrees Fahrenheit.
The issue with determining the freezing time of cologne
It’s almost hard to calculate the freezing time in Cologne. Because cologne is sent in glass bottles, it seldom rests in a robust metal container. As a result, glass freezes faster than cologne, causing the perfume container to fracture before the cologne does.
Glass is a solid that is amorphous. As a result, there is no definite freezing point for glass, preventing us from correctly establishing the freezing point of scent. Glass, for example, is amorphous and only gradually hardens or crystalizes.
This is known as the ‘glass transition,’ and it refers to all of the temperatures that ultimately lead to viscoelastic changes in the materials. This might suggest that we don’t know how cologne glass bottles would respond in cold or freezing conditions.
It all depends on the glass, and the duration of the negative temperature exposure may have a greater impact on the whole process than the negative temperature itself.
What our very scientific experiment on perfume freezing reveals
All of this is based on scientific research on alcohol freezing points and viscoelastic changes in glass. But what happens to cologne when it’s subjected to subzero temperatures?
To put this to the test, we picked Rasasi Daarej, a bold fragrance from our range. The following were the testing conditions:
- Overnight stranded in the snow (about 9 hours)
- Overnight, there was a steady snowfall.
- When left outdoors, the temperature is 32 degrees Fahrenheit (0 degrees Celsius)
- The temperature was 37.4 degrees Fahrenheit when I checked it in the morning (3 degrees Celsius)
- The lowest temperature was 24.8 degrees Fahrenheit at night (-4 degrees Celsius)
Our courageous Daarej cologne made it through the night without freezing in these extreme circumstances.

Sure, the weather wasn’t very hot. However, it was still below freezing.
After rescuing the cologne from the heavy snow, it was allowed to rest at room temperature for roughly an hour inside. After an hour, I sprayed the fragrance on my wrist to find that the scent had not altered.
Finally, cologne does not freeze around the freezing point or just below the freezing point. Its high ethanol concentration (which is used to dilute essential oils) makes it safe even when left on the ground in the snow overnight.
The majority of people interested in participating in the experiment were suspicious about the conclusion. This perfume, it turned out, wasn’t quite ready to be frozen.
Heat, rather than freezing, has a greater influence on cologne and essential oils, which may be one of the reasons why many famous fragrances are packaged in amber glasses, which reduce the amount of direct sunlight reaching the liquid.

Is cologne affected by temperature?
